Last Tuesday, residents in the Costa Rican cities of Jose, Parrita, Pavas, Escazu and Hatillo saw something so spectacular that they wondered if the “end times” were upon us.
Hovering above them in the sky had been a multi-hued, iridescent cloud that looked as if God himself had painted it.
“We were just so amazed,” Escazu resident Joey Petit, whose son captured the phenomenon on video, told ABC News reporters.
Fellow resident Jessie Montealegre echoed his sentiment, saying, “It was breathtaking; It’s like a sign of God.”
The sudden appearance of this strange cloud led many on social media to speculate about its origin, with some claiming that it may have been produced by aliens or UFOs. A few even even pondered whether perhaps the cloud was a sign of the “end times” as prophesied in the Bible.
According to Eladio Solano, a meteorologist with Costa Rica’s National Meteorological Institute, the odd cloud was nothing more than a scientific aberration caused by sunlight being refracted by water droplets and ice crystals within the cloud.
Similar phenomenon have reportedly been seen elsewhere. It is known as “cloud iridescence.”
