It’s a good thing he jumped out of bed.
Third-grader Caleb Hunt of Conway, Arkansas, awoke from his early morning sleep to “a groaning noise” outside his window.
Most children would have cowered under their covers, hoping the mysterious sound would go away. But not Caleb. His curiosity got the better of him and, as a result, he became a local hero.
When Caleb heard the groaning, he got out of bed and went to the window. That’s when he saw his 81-year-old neighbor, Sue Watson.
“It was a groaning noise calling for help,” the boy told Arkansas Matters. “I looked out the window and she was on the ground in the garage.”
Apparently, Watson was taking her garbage out to the curb for pickup but fell in the garage. Having sustained a broken hip, she was helpless on the floor. Despite the garage door being open, people passing her home did not notice her.
Caleb ran outside to the elderly woman, assessed her condition and ran back home to call 911.
The story has a happy ending because the elderly woman is recovering and 8 year-old Caleb Hunt has said he will take over her trash duties.
