‘I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers’

Trump on more than one occasion has spoken of the need to shut borders to Muslim immigrants in order to give security officials time to perform adequate threat assessments. For that, he’s come under fire from both sides of the political aisle.

In a Huffington Post interview published Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan stated he would not hesitate to sue a Republican president if they are committing executive overreach.

“Nothing is a blank check,” he said when Fuller asked if there was anything that could cause Ryan to retract his endorsement of the presumptive GOP nominee. “You never give anyone for any reason a blank check on anything.”“We don’t believe in executive overreach. Obviously it’s one of the planks of our agenda,” he added. “I’ve spoken with Donald Trump at great length about the REINS Act, about executive overreach and about the need to get this back in place.”

“We are a separate but equal branch of government. Don’t think for a second that we’re not going to stand up for the legislative branch’s prerogatives and priorities… Are we going to exert our Article 1 powers… no matter who the president is?,” Ryan posed. “Absolutely.”

“I would sue any president who exceeds his or her powers. Look, I’ve got about three or for of them with Barack Obama right now. This isn’t partisan. This is principle.”
