President Obama praised his 2012 Republican presidential challenger former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, after Romney tweeted Take down the #ConfederateFlag at the SC Capitol in the wake of Wednesday’s racist mass shooting at a historically African-American church in Charleston, S.C. To many, it is a symbol of racial hatred. Remove it now to honor #Charleston victims, Romney’s Saturday morning tweet concluded.
Obama was also quick to capitalize on the shooting and tweet his support for more gun control regulations. “Here are the stats: Per population, we kill each other with guns at a rate 297x more than Japan, 49x more than France, 33x more than Israel,” Obama tweeted.
“Expressions of sympathy aren’t enough,” the president tweeted. “It’s time we do something about this.”
