Protesters waving Confederate flags greeted President Barack Obama at his hotel in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night, days after he heralded the South Carolina government’s decision to remove the flag from state capitol grounds after nine African Americans were shot dead in a Charleston church.
The man who organized the flag display—to the dismay of other onlookers—said he didn’t see it as a symbol of racism, according to local NBC affiliate KFOR.
It wasn’t the first time Obama has been met with the Confederate flag recently. A similar display was seen when he visited the Nashville area earlier this month.
