Skeletons in the family closet?
President Barack Obama took part in a celebration on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which brought an end to slavery in the United States, according to CBS News.
“We gather here to commemorate a century-and-a-half of freedom, not simply for former slaves, but for all of us,” Obama said. “The question of slavery was never simply about civil rights, it was about the meaning of America, the kind of country we wanted to be, whether this nation might fulfill the call of its birth.”
He also made remarks equating slavery with religious bigotry, not-so-subtly taking a jab at Republican presidential candidates who are taking a hard line against radical Islamic terrorism. Of course, this president has never been known for subtlety.
However, there was one thing about the history of slavery in this country that Obama neglected to mention in his speech: his own family’s history of owning slaves.
According to a 2007 article by the Chicago Tribune, some of Obama’s ancestors were slave owners.
A part-time genealogist who worked at the Library of Congress discovered the records of slaves on Obama’s mother’s side of the family while preparing an ancestry report for the then-senator from Illinois.
“According to the research, one of Obama’s great-great-great-great grandfathers, George Washington Overall, owned two slaves who were recorded in the 1850 census in Nelson County (Kentucky),” the Tribune reported. “The same records show that one of Obama’s great-great-great-great-great-grandmothers, Mary Duvall, also owned two slaves.”
If President Obama is ashamed of our nation’s history of slavery, then he must be equally ashamed of his own family, which took part in that dark practice.
Are there no demands for “reparations” from him? Why aren’t people taking down statues of him? Why do people still sing songs about him? Liberals are foaming at the mouth to eradicate traces of history that might cause “emotional stress” in this day and age, but I suspect that they’ll make an exception with Obama.
