Illegal immigrants caught crossing the border are telling immigration officials something that contradicts the Obama administration’s narrative about the motivation some have entering the United States using this method.
According to the Associated Press, one of the reasons many illegal immigrants make the trek to America is because they believe they will be allowed to stay and receive public benefits.
The AP reports:
“The interviews with immigrants by federal agents were intended to help the Obama administration understand what might be driving a puzzling surge in the numbers of border crossings that started over the summer. The explanations suggest the U.S. government’s efforts to discourage illegal crossings may have been unsuccessful.”
The surge in illegal crossings began in the summer of 2014, when tens of thousands of unaccompanied illegal minors were apprehended after crossing the border. It’s continued in 2015, though to a lesser extent.
Many have argued that Obama’s DACA program, as well as his executive action on amnesty, has simply drawn further waves of illegal immigrants.
Jessica M. Vaughan, former State Department official and Director of Policy Studies with the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) told the Washington Examiner in September 2014:
“Talk of amnesty and a lack of enforcement inspires them… the fact that almost no one who has arrived with a family or as an unaccompanied juvenile has been sent home serves as proof to those still in Central America that their chances to stay in the U.S. are very good if they come soon.”
The AP reports that despite the Obama administration spending time and money on “public service campaigns in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala to highlight the dangers and consequences of making the trek across Mexico to cross illegally into the United States,” potential illegal immigrants have not been dissuaded.
I’m not sure what’s worse, the influx of illegals or the fact that the Obama admin was “puzzled” about it. It’s a real head-scratcher…
