During House floor debate Thursday over providing additional funding to the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives, which is looking into the ethics of the medical practices of abortion service providers and the business practices of the procurement organizations who sell baby body parts, Reps. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) called the committee “fake” and claimed it would fuel “fake news.”
Moore opened her argument saying, “We’ve heard so much about fake news lately, and now we are being asked for taxpayer funding for fake congressional committees.”
“The fake committee’s only goal is to create Orwellian unfacts,” she claimed. “So far this fake committee has found no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood or their doctors, and of course, this panel knows that they wouldn’t find anything because Planned Parenthood has been cleared of wrongdoing 17 times by 3 different House committees, 17 state investigations, and a grand jury.”
Moore concluded claiming that “what we really need to get to the bottom of is what will it take to get Republicans to get the target off women’s backs. Do that, and we might actually make some progress.”
Deutch argued that Republicans know the panel’s investigation “will feed fake news sites on the Internet. They know that it will block women from exercising their constitutional rights, and they know that it will unfairly harass women’s health clinics.”
“This panel serves no true investigatory purpose. It is a political tool. It is a disgrace,” he concluded.
However, Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah) countered the claims that the panel was “useless” and “fake” by pointing to some of the panel’s criminal and regulatory referrals that have resulted in “numerous investigations around the nation.”
“There’s so much that we don’t know and the American people don’t know or still don’t understand about this industry. However, since the panel’s investigation, we have uncovered alarming revelations about the fetal tissue industry,” Love emphasized.
