Donald Trump is a man of many virtues, but restraint isn’t one of them. When fellow GOP candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson questioned Trump’s faith, The Donald responded with a stinging rebuke in an interview on Thursday.

While saying that Carson was an “okay doctor,” Trump asserted of Carson that, “he makes (Jeb) Bush look like the Energizer Bunny.”

“He’s starting to hit me, so I hit back,” Trump said in the CNN interview. “I only hit back when I get hit.”

Trump’s remarks came in the wake of Ben Carson’s appearance on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Wednesday night, in which Carson said that while he’s never denied his Christian faith, he didn’t “get that impression with (Trump).”

Trump told CNN he was “a great believer in God and a great believer in the Bible,” and asked what grounds Carson had “to question my faith … he doesn’t even know me. I’ve met him a few times.”

“I have known of Ben Carson for a long time and never heard faith was a big thing until just recently when he started running,” Trump said. “All of a sudden he becomes the great religious figure. I saw him yesterday quoting on humility and it looked like he memorized it two minutes before he made the quote.”

Trump also said that if conservatives want to question his faith, they should “go back to look at (Carson’s) views on abortion … he was heavy into the world of abortion and he was a doctor…
