This is INSANE.
Barack Obama is as determined as ever to close down our detention center at Guantanamo Bay, and he’s willing to put you and your loved ones inside U.S. borders in danger to do it.
According to The Associated Press, a team from the Defense Department will visit two Colorado prisons, one state and one federal, to assess their readiness to accept dangerous detainees who have been locked up in the military base on the island of Cuba.
Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City and a medium-security (what?!) prison in Florence are the two Colorado institutions that will be reviewed, according to Defense Department officials.
Officials from the Pentagon have already taken a look at the Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston, South Carolina.
The primary considerations are how easy and cost efficient it would be to convert the facilities to house the detainees and to conduct military tribunals.
Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Gary Ross admitted that the medium-security prison would need upgrades, but insisted that the plan to transfer them there was sound.
“These efforts are consistent with our commitment to working with Congress to close Guantanamo, and are intended to help inform Congress of how we can meet this goal and what it will cost,” Cmdr. Ross said.
Of course, Congress doesn’t necessarily want to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay — that’s mostly the province of the president, who seems to think that his legacy is worth more than your security.
Take, for example, Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, a Republican.
“I call on the Obama Administration to immediately halt any consideration of this irresponsible idea,” Gardner said.
