Breastfeeding — particularly breastfeeding in public — has often been a topic of controversy. Babies need to eat. They sometimes don’t tolerate being covered. Or waiting. Mothers (and the general public, as well) come in varying degrees of modesty.

The result is a war waged through public shaming — either comments or disapproving stares — and social media rants that cover both extremes and everything in between.

Ashley Kaidel, 24, recently posted a photo of herself breastfeeding her son in public. In the photo, she appeared to be staring off into space, but she explained that that was not the case:

“Number one, breast feeding mothers are protected under federal law to breast feed any way, any how and any where they’re allowed to be in all circumstances otherwise.

Number two, you should not ever feel shamed, belittled, embarrassed or wrong for feeding your baby the way nature intended.”
